Project Description

San Antonio El Sitio Wind Power Project is the first wind project located in the Guatemalan region. The project deploys sixteen units of Vestas wind turbines and delivers an average of 122 GWh of green electricity to the regional grid, contributing to an approximate reduction of 82,902 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year by displacing equivalent fossil fuel generation.

The project not only increases energy supply in the region and reduces electricity costs, but also assists in the conservation of resources, local community development, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Local communities have benefited from employment, health and education improvements, improved infrastructure, and broader socio-economic development.

Key impacts: Increased regional energy supply — Reduced electricity costs — Technology transfer and coordination with other wind energy implementers — Local employment, prioritizing neighboring communities — Infrastructure development including local schools and sport facilities.

Article 6.4 Transition

The San Antonio CDM Project has formally requested its transition to the Article 6.4 mechanism under the Paris Agreement for vintages 2021–2025, marking an important step toward aligning the project with the evolving international carbon market framework.

The transition request is currently under review by the National Designated Authority (NDA), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN). This review process is essential to ensure that the project meets the national and international requirements for participation under Article 6.4, including alignment with Guatemala’s climate commitments and authorization procedures.

Once approved, this transition will allow the San Antonio Project to continue generating high-integrity carbon credits under the new global mechanism established by the Paris Agreement, reinforcing its contribution to greenhouse gas emission reductions, sustainable development, and long-term environmental integrity.

This milestone reflects the project’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards in carbon certification while supporting the global shift toward more transparent and robust climate action mechanisms.
